Why don’t you RSA that!?

Our movie will be based on the whiteboard style knowledge visualisation that RSA is renown for. RSA animate was first popularised by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts (hence the name RSA); a British non-profit dedicated to promoting theoretical and conceptual thinking. Starting in late 2009, RSA began to produce animates which were ‘hand-drawn’ in tandem with an audio file explaining an important theory or concept. This technique deemed to be extremely attractive and hence valuable for it gained the attention of millions of viewers online.

We decided to follow this tract for our video as it is not only informative but also interesting for the viewer to watch. Instead of flooding our audience with raw information we are providing them with visuals which will not only better help them understand our solution but also increase the uptake of the information. Furthermore, we were instructed by our tutor that our  proposition video should be multifunctional, also serving as a marketing campaign video.

So how are these videos made…?

This is exactly the same question that our group(s) asked when the RSA-style illustrations were being considered. We were a little worried that the skills required for such a video were not within the realm of our technical expertise ( no offense Kalvis, you are an awesome Technology Stewart 😀 )

The early animations were speeded-up camera recordings of live drawings. This means that person a would film person b doing live drawings. Although this might not seem very complicated is definitely requires much more precision and skill than now a days.

With today’s technology the process of animation has become far more refined; combing the art of drawing, filming, editing and computer animation all into one. Instead of having to draw everything ‘right’ the first time around (no pressure at all), technology has enabled us with the possibility to edit mistakes out of final works.

A widespread method of producing such videos is having the artist or artists in our case draw the animates first, and then shooting the hand erasing the line.The footage is then reversed, or run backwards to deliver the appearance of the comic being drawn flawlessly the first time.

The other (less fantastical) method is creating a digital sketch, which has the advantage of allowing the client to command refinements of the animation or movie sequence at any time in the process but the disadvantage of it looking less realistic. This method creates the same hand drawn images but without the hand as a prop (because it is  green-screened), making it look like an invisible wand is doing all the drawing.

WISH US LUCK!!

This is the last week of module 1 which we actually started working on our video. Unfortunately, one of our group mates quitted the program and we end up with four people in our group. This actually brought a big challenge to our group to get over with the work and dividing the tasks between four of us instead of five! This week we started making the video and we are still busy and focused on recording and drawing our final video. We also decided on making a new storyboard which would convey our final idea much better to the viewer as our previous storyboard was a bit vague and not clearly showed the message. Our final script which we wrote last week is a big help for us in recording session of the video. These, storyboard and script, actually help us a lot to organize our ideas and put them into a final video indeed. We distributed the tasks for video editing to Daniel and Li jing, Liu does the drawing as he is very talented in drawing, and I am in charge of writing the introduction and the conclusion of our video. I am also going to be the spokesperson and going to voice over the video! I am actually going to tackle this big challenge of speaking as fast as possible while introducing the cure of our idea to our NGO.

In my opinion, our team work this week was the best. All group members knew their tasks and were busy working on their tasks during project community class. The most important thing is our collaboration while everybody does a different task. We all very appreciate to help each other and make sure none is struggling with his or her tasks. As we were three groups with 3 different ideas for our NGO, we tried to make one storyline out of our 3 ideas and make a report of them to provide to our NGO as well. We are on our way to finishing the video and that means the end of project community. It was a great experience of working in groups, it had ups and downs in teamwork, I think it could have been done a lot better if we have gotten together earlier in previous weeks as well. Also most important group work, decision making, listening to others, tolerating each other, coming up with different ideas and putting it up together and meeting up made this project community a big challenge for me and my groupmates.

Week X

Ladies and gents! We are almost on the finish line! We no longer count which week into the project it is – it’s officially a countdown!

This week was full of collaboration. At this point we are working with fellow watotos so well – we complement each other like the magical yin-yang of peanut butter and jelly. But it wasn’t always like that. It took us good 3 weeks to reach “Zen” of collaboration. I’d like to point out the fact that there are only two teams within our NGO group which was crucial for such an early onset of our strong cooperation.

10 people means more work done, right?

No. I’ve discovered that for us the biggest benefit of working in a larger group was not the amount of work done, but the quality of it. Having more minds on board allowed us to dig deeper in our research and more critically evaluate the challenges and propositions we defined for our NGO. Another great thing is that we are the “guinea pigs” of one of our own proposals to our NGO – the expansion of volunteer network. There are a lot of similarities between Stahili Foundation and our team in that matter. Stahili’s started of as a group of 3 with additional help of few wonderful volunteers, and with the amount of work they have right now they need to expand and diversify their volunteer network in order to maintain their rate of success. We, on the other hand, started of as two separate teams of 5 working on one goal, and very soon realized, that if we make it right, we will achieve greater success through collaboration. We tried different approaches in working in a large group before we discovered one that really suited us.

Our recipe to a successful teamwork

On Monday we gather together, review the agenda in the Manual and create our own interactive To-Do list. When we have defined tasks for the week, (for us it’s better to have two to three important tasks each week  – more tasks have negative influence on the quality of result), we split into teams of 4 or 5, according to one’s personal skills and desires. Afterwards we continue working within those teams throughout the week, and have whole group discussions at least twice during our meetings. There are several benefits of this practice – first, everyone gets to express their thoughts, second – each person concentrates on one team’s task, without having to switch between topics, and finally it builds up trust within our group.

Here’s some magic of our approach at work – last Wednesday our collaboration led to creation of a 2,5 m tall Storyboard.

During the weekend everyone had time to reflect on the Storyboard we crafted on Wednesday individually, and one common thing that we unanimously agreed upon was that our story was too vague and complex for anyone outside of our group. We needed clarity. With few very useful insights from our teacher we created a guideline for the story we want to tell in the video. This time it covered not just the solutions to the challenges, but also explained why we chose these particular challenges and why is it essential for Stahili to address them first. Right now our Storyboard floats in digital space of Google Documents for each of the group members to see and improve.

What do we do now?

At the given moment, following our tradition, we split into two teams – one is working on the script of the video, and the other one is busy with researching technical aspects of our video-making. Every member has an assignment within his team that suits his or her capabilities best.

Above that, we are strongly cooperating with our NGO and look forward to meet with them again during our autumn break.

Life is sweet. So is my group.

Reflection week 7

What we have done this week what’s the progress of the process?

This is the week where we basically need to wrap up everything we’ve been doing till now and put this ‘everything’ in an easily digestible video to advise the Stahili Foundation.

Even if we as a group needed to tackle some challenges in our decision making-process we are still enthusiastic about the end result and the effect we might achieve.  Enthusiastic in that sense we hope to give “our” NGO useful advice that will help to boost the effectiveness and efficiency of the work they’re doing.

With this enthusiastic mood we going into this team adventure of filming a short and informative video for advising the stahili foundation. For this Video we have already prepared the storyboard and we have had a feedback session, where we recognized that we first need to create valuable content (for the NGO) to later be able to visualize it in an catchy, understandable and useful manner. Valuable – what’s that? What we are meaning? Meaning; we recognized we need to improve our WHAT, HOW, WHY  to better make sense of our findings. Hence be able to not only inform the Stahili foundation but also encourage action.

As we worked in a collaborative group with InterHague and considering that we more or less experienced steadily changing sub-groups, we also divided the task for filming the video between all members (of two groups). Just to name it once we split up in Script Writers, Film-Crew, Editing People.

Preparation for the video includes when and where to film the video. Further the materials and devices we are going to need on the spot. Besides patience somebody might bring the storyboard that we actually know what we are doing.

The VIDEO includes the main issues the foundation faces, what we researched during the last weeks and the effects we actually trying to achieve.

The content of the Video in short:

What? Volunteers

why -> be more effective, sustain and expand the impact that they have right now

more donations through efficient work

how -> recruit, manage, support

utilize differents tools and methods to achieve those objectives

What? Fundraising

why? -> build and maintain a better/closer relationship with donors

Final Touches!!

Hello everyone!

Week 7 has already passed and in my group we had our final touches to our final constructive idea for our NGO ‘Robotica Educativa’. As a solution our group came up with the idea of creating an online platform, more specifically, creating an APP for Robotica Educativa. Our group theme was crowdfunding, kickstarter for instance is a way of crowdfunding, however our idea of creating an app is to create a Game Application in form of robots games which requires donations from people all around the globe in order to be able to play the game. This donation helps robotica to use the money and create robot.

Here is the script about our constructive idea, making an APP:

The main idea of our group is to collaborate with,Tecnologico De Monterrey or Guadalajara University in Mexico, in order to develop a robot game for Robotica Educativa on the App Store. We did an analysis of games which we considered were the most similar ones to what we want to make. Iron Man, which is a very successful game developed by Gameloft company. Because of the real visual effect and excellent game experience, it attracts millions subscribers each year. More than that, the users of this game are required to donate money for their robots, if they want to play further or update the kits. In this way, Gameloft company, makes a huge profit. After all this research we discovered that there is a great potential to get financial benefits out of a game made by Robotica Educativa.

Our design idea draw from this previous experience. We would like to focus on addressing crowd-funding through this game platform. This game is designed in five parts, including, Community Introduction, Robots Design, Personal Account, Game Center, and Exhibition.

The first part, community introduction, is used for giving a brief background introduction of Robotic Educativa. Through widely publicity, the users will have a better understanding about what the arduous challenge Robotica Educativa facing.

When it comes to the Robots Design, It provides several robot roles for the players of all over the world, and it is also an innovation platform we provide for the Mexican kids, they could design any kinds of robot they want in the game as well.

Game Center: The donation is the most important part in the Game Center. The players should pay money for the robot they like, even the small mechanical parts of the robot. They could choose the amount of money they want to donate freely. Once the donation is done the user has the absolute freedom to play games and update their kits. Also the users will see how his/her robots improve while playing. In the meanwhile, each robot has a value evaluation, when enough money has been collected, this amount of money is going to be used for the materials to make the real robot for kids.

Personal Account: Each player needs to create a personal account in order to play. Here the user will be able to see his/her donations. In addition, there will be also space for all the records they would have in the game system.

Exhibition Page: This page is used for exhibiting all of the real robot they make.

It also provides a platform for Robotica Educativa to interact with all of those who are willing to know and help them. They will be able to upload videos and comment on their activities in Mexico, show everyone the facilities they have to produce all their products…

Robotica Educativa will probably need technical support in order to create the real app. therefore we are going to contact Tecnologico De Monterrey or Guadalajara University and ask for their help. A good game will have more fame though, more advantages for Robotica Educativa.

Final Touches!!
